Close to home
Named for its once-famous lithia mineral water springs, this small town west of Atlanta became a top destination for the rich and famous in the late 1880s. Celebrity names such as Roosevelt, Vanderbilt and more flocked from around the country to the Sweet Water Hotel where they relaxed in the lithia springs. In 1888, the Piedmont Chautauqua Institute brought more visitors who came for the intellectual enlightenment along with the health benefits. While neither of these sites survive, the area remains a popular location because of its proximity to Atlanta. And outdoor enthusiasts will still find a bucolic setting at the nearby Sweetwater Creek State Park that boasts a 215-acre lake ideal for boating and fishing, picnic shelters, boat ramps, playgrounds, trails, outdoor fitness equipment and campsites.
Kensington Park is also a short drive from the popular Six Flags Over Georgia, a world-class amusement park on 290 acres. Shoppers will find it takes just 12 minutes to arrive at Arbor Place Mall, home to leading retailers such as Macy’s, Dillard’s, Old Navy and Ulta, as well as Regal Cinemas Arbor Place 18 and IMAX and a range of restaurant favorites.
